Design: The reverse of the coin depicts Captain Cook's HMS Endeavour sailing near Mount Taranaki (also known as Mount Egmont), with the denomination "50" and the word "ENDEAVOUR" visible. The obverse side, not visible in this image but common to all New Zealand coins, features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Significance: The HMS Endeavour holds historical importance as the ship on which Captain James Cook became the first Briton to reach New Zealand in October 1769.
Composition and Size (older large version): The larger versions of this coin, issued from 1967 and demonetized in 2006, were made of copper-nickel and had a diameter of 31.75 mm and a weight of 13.61 g, making them the largest New Zealand dollar coin introduced at that time.
Modern Version: A smaller, lighter version made of nickel-plated steel was introduced in 2006, replacing the original large coin, but retaining the same iconic Endeavour design.
