This copper token was issued by the Bank of Upper Canada and served as a form of currency within the colony.
The Bank of Upper Canada was authorized to coin copper in 1850 and employed firms like Row, Kentish & Co. to order production at the Royal Mint.
The 1852 issue, like the one pictured, was partly struck by Heaton & Sons in Birmingham using dies supplied by the Royal Mint.
The token features a design based on Benedetto Pistrucci's British coin design, with the initials 'R.K. & Co.' (Rowe, Kentish, & Co.) below the dragon, indicating the agent used by the Bank of Upper Canada for their orders.
