Front Design: The front of the coin features the National Coat of Arms of Guatemala, which includes the national bird (the Resplendent Quetzal), a scroll with the date of Central American independence (September 15, 1821), crossed rifles and swords, and a laurel wreath.
Reverse Design: The reverse side, as shown in the image, depicts the "Monolito de Quiriguá" (a monolith from the ancient Maya archaeological site of Quiriguá) and the denomination "10 CENTAVOS".
Composition & Value: While later versions of the 10 Centavos coin were made of nickel brass or stainless steel, the 1966 version, like other coins from that era (e.g., 1958, 1964), was composed of silver with a fineness of 0.720.
Currency System: The Quetzal, introduced in 1925, is the official currency of Guatemala and replaced the peso. The first coins, including the 10 centavos, were issued in various denominations ranging from 1 centavo to 1 quetzal.
