Paya tin toys originated in Ibi, Spain, with tinsmith Don Rafael Payá beginning to make hand-painted metal toys, including a horse-drawn coach, in 1902. His sons established the Payá Hermanos (Payá Brothers) company in 1905 and built Spain's first toy factory in 1906, rapidly becoming a leader in the Spanish toy industry with their original, quality tinplate toys. Following their success in competing with German and French brands, Paya's production largely ceased during World War II but resumed in 1946, though with financial struggles. In 1985, the company began producing limited runs of reissued classic toys using original molds and machinery
